Richard Prince and Rephotography

Richard Prince’s more famous works come through the process of re-photography. Rephotography is the process of taking photos from others work and photographing the photos, but this time the photo serves the purpose and vision of the rephotographer. A majority of Richard Prince’s photographic work is taking photos used for advertisements, getting rid of the advertisement part, and working with what he had left over. Richard himself said the process of finding images to rephotograph was equivalent to “beachcombing”. Richard’s most famous rephotographic work is his cowboys series; from 1980 to 1992, and is actually still ongoing.

Interesting, Alben. Do you think Richard Prince is changing the meaning of these cowboy photographs by rephotographing them? They were originally ads for cigarettes I believe. Do you think he is commenting on the macho imagery of tobacco products or getting at something deeper?

Sorry Abdur-Raheem, I accidentally wrote “Alben” in my reply. I was looking at his page at the same time and I crossed your names in my mind!
